The heart of the Garden Route is now the home of steam in South Africa. In addition to boasting the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, the last scheduled mixed steam train service in South Africa – the Transnet Heritage Foundation has established the Outeniqua Railway Museum in George.

The only National Railway Museum in South Africa, the Outeniqua Railway Museum is an experience worth changing itineraries for. The museum is housed in the old PX shed in George (off Mission Street) – 15 000 square metres under one roof – with four railway lines running into the museum.

THE OUTENIQUA CHOO-TJOE:

South Africa’s last scheduled mixed steam train service operates on the Outeniqualand Preserved Railway between George & Knysna. The experience includes some of the most picturesque scenery, and takes you through forests and fern covered hills and across lakes which divide the ocean from the valleys, gorges and streams that lead from the Outeniqua mountains.
