Victoria Bay

The Southern Cape boasts many lovely beaches offering great swimming spots, big waves or fish aplenty. One of the safest swimming spots close to George is VICTORIA BAY known throughout the country for its excellent waves which make it a firm favourite with surfers, body surfers and paddlers alike.

Leentjiesklip

But if this little beach becomes too crowded to your taste, take a further drive eastwards to Leentjiesklip. The bonus is that, when you get tired of simply lying in the sun, you can take a leisurely walk for hours on this endless beach.

Glentana/Herolds Bay/Flat Rock/Kleinkrantz/Swartvleisrand

Other beaches where you can try the waves, are GLENTANA, HEROLDS BAY(right), Flat rock, Kleinkrantz & Swartvleistrand.  Glentana is a firm favourite with people who like to combine suntanning and walking, as one can walk all the way to GREAT BRAK RIVER(below) or even Mossel Bay, along the beautiful white beach. The George side of Glentana beach also offers some interesting rock pools for those who enjoy pottering around looking for interesting fish or shells.

Wilderness Touw River

Or if you are not in the mood for swimming in the sea, try the calm waters of one of our lagoons or rivers. The WILDERNESS TOUW RIVER LAGOON, the KAAIMANS RIVER LAGOON and the SWARTVLEI are recommended, but do keep to the swimming zones.

Tergniet & Rheebok

An even better bet for rock pool lovers is the beach at TERGNIET & RHEEBOK, where the rock banks stretch out almost as far as the eye can see.

Other swimming spots

For an icy dip, try the WATERFALL in the Swart river, the POOLS above the Garden route Dam & the Kaaimans river WEIR at Saasveld. Permits are required for these (871-7010).   A day long hike along the Groeneweide Forest walk will also bring you to some lovely river swimming spots.
